4 Common Birthday Party Fumbles and How to Avoid them

Birthdays are one of our fondest childhood memories. Kids wait all year for that one day when they grow a year older—and taller! But no matter how tall they get, you can still exceed their expectations by throwing a fantastic party.
Games, cake, gifts and pictures are all important birthday rituals that need to be taken seriously. It’s a momentous occasion for a child and they expect nothing less than a birthday extravaganza.
But in order to pull off an event that perfectly, you must plan meticulously. From coordinating with guests, considering their availability, arranging all vendors, setting a theme, planning activities, and deciding a menu, it often requires many sleepless nights to make it happen.
With so many things to do, the chances of error are also high. Here’s how to avoid a few fumbles.

1. Schedule food and games at different times

This is by far the worst mistake to make when planning any event—even more so in the case of birthdays.

The colorful cupcakes, chocolate-chip cookies, butter crème cakes and juices are the kind of feast a child would love any day. You might have to run after your kid every day to make them take the next bite of food, but not on their birthday.
However, if you steal time from their games, it might be a problem. Don’t make them an offer they CAN refuse.
Food and games shouldn’t happen at the same time. After all, it takes hours of effort to make a twister chart big enough to fit 20 children or to make a pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey game. Don’t let it go to waste because of faulty planning.

2. Planning like a one-man army

We know it feels good to be your child’s superhero but there are only so many superhuman abilities a parent can possess. Don’t take it upon yourself to plan the entire event down to the T. Take help whenever necessary; you’ll still be their hero!

One of the many pitfalls of becoming a one-man-army is that a crucial aspect of the event might slip your mind.
The best way to move forward is to have a few other planners on board so in case you fall sick or are running short on time, they can step in and take it from there. Having more people helping you out with planning will ensure the event goes smoothly.

3. Asking guests for their availability before picking a date

This is by far the perfect formula for a failed event—or no event at all!

Think about what you’ll do if you have to start planning a birthday. That’s right: you’ll make a WhatsApp group. You’ll add guests to it and announce your intent for making that group.
If you start off with asking people for their availability, you’ll NEVER reach a consensus. It’s next to impossible to get 20+ people to agree on the same date and be willing to come to your party.
The best way to go about it is to decide a date that’s feasible for you and then allow others to manage their schedule accordingly. It’s more likely that people will shift their plans to accommodate your event than agreeing on a date that works for everyone.

4. Planning outdoors without checking the weather forecast

With all the event décor in place, you don’t want the rain to ruin your day. This is the biggest risk with outdoor events. If you’re set on doing a garden party, make sure you have checked the weather forecast beforehand.
Even if the skies are predicted to be clear on the expected date, you can’t ever be too sure. Make sure to have a contingency arrangement in case a storm strikes!
